Adventures In Apartment Gardening - Fungus Gnats

What fun!

I'm being incredibly sarcastic. I love my plants, love the whole indoor gardening process so, so much but these fungus gnats are bringing out my dark side. If you've had to deal with these things you will know exactly what I'm talking about. If you haven't encountered fungus gnats, I'd like to explain;

Warning, it's pretty horrific.

Can you see how many this Hybrid Sundew is eating? I think there are at least 100. Which is great!

This is Sunny my original Cape Sundew. Can you see how many he's eating?!

The green of some his leaves is so obscured that they just look black from a distance. Like thick spiders legs.

I have 3 more Sundews, all helping with the rid the apartment of fungus gnats cause.

We also have 5 of these yellow traps hanging.

(Sorry for the pic quality in this post, the light in here pretty bad and that trap was really hard to get to!)

8 crude water traps.

And an experiment. Out of date vanilla extract proving successful!

And STILL there are dozens flying around us! Can you imagine if we didn't have these traps?!

Fungus gnats are quite simply EVIL.

As mentioned in my earlier apartment gardening post, they have killed SO many of my seedlings and are thwarting the growth of the ones that they haven't murdered. These plants are family, I'm totally on a mission to save them!

Another tactic has been Neem Oil mixed with water and a little washing-up liquid. You thoroughly spray the surface dirt and it's supposed to kill they larvae so they never make it to gnat stage. We've only done one spray so far as you have to leave it 3 or 4 days in between. It's said to work in a few weeks I think.

Yesterday I did yet more research and discovered a biological solution; Beneficial Nematodes. They're minuscule worms that hunt the larvae and eat them. They HUNT them! And they start working 24 hours after you set them free. The Nematodes are going to feast 😋

Will report back with a progress report... Hopefully titled Fungus Gnat Free!!!

💜💜💜
